Orcas! - Guest Contributor - Zeke, age 9, Nanaimo, BC

An orca out in the ocean
In Argentina, orcas hunt baby sea lions on the beach..

The orcas charge full speed and fling their bodies onto the beach to grab the sea lions. They get back into the water by flailing.

I like this fact because orcas are sea animals and risk their lives to come out of the water to get food. This behavior only happens in Argentina where the whales have learned how.

Tree Frogs! - Guest Contributor - Elle, starting grade 2, Mukilteo WA

European Tree Frog*
Did you know tree frogs hunt for prey at night? Tree frogs like to catch moths, crickets and flies.

This is possible because tree frogs have amazing night vision because of this part of their eye called Tapetum.

I think this is really interesting that the tree frogs know there will be fewer predators out at night. So that’s why they choose to eat then.

Chickens! - Guest Contributor - Tiana, grade 3, Troy NY

Did you know that chickens have a tooth!  Well they do!  In reality, a chicken only has one tooth and keeps it for only a short time!

When chickens hatch they have what is called an egg tooth.  A baby chick uses the egg tooth just to peck its way out of the egg.  Once the chick is out of the egg, the egg tooth falls off the chicken, usually within a week.

It is so cool to only have one tooth for such a short time!

Lightning! - Guest Contributor - Royale, grade 3, Troy NY

You may not know much about lightning.  Well let me tell you some facts about lightning.

First of all, lightning is very dangerous. I'll inform you not to go swimming during a LIGHTNING STORM. Next, when a lightning bolt strikes the electrical energy quickly changes into heat.  Temperatures in the path of a lightning bolt can reach as high as 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit, 5 times hotter than the surface of the sun.

In conclusion, lightning is dangerous and now I hope you know why I made this passage.

Evolution - Guest Contributor -  Zara, grade 2, Toronto, Canada

Did you know that whales evolved from animals that walked on land? They were called Pakicetus. Pakicetus had four legs, a tail and sharp teeth. They looked nothing like whales!!

We know they are related because a bone in the Pakicetus skull is like the ear bone of a whale. Evolution is interesting to me because animals change over millions of years into something completely different and new.

Binary Code - Guest Contributor -  Ella, grade 4, Seattle, WA

Picture of Ella and her light switch as a binary switch

Did you know that in computer language A = 01000001 and 3 = 0011? Computers can’t understand our language so they turn it into 0 or 1; this is called binary code.  This is possible because computers are made of electrical circuits, and the circuits can only be on or off (1 or 0).

You can also say words! This is CAT:  01000011 01000001 01010100. I think binary code is cool because it can turn letters and numbers into 0 and 1, and computers understand that language.
